LA County reports 10 cases of mysterious illness making dogs sick

Los Angeles County health officials are actively investigating cases of a mysterious respiratory disease affecting dogs nationwide. To date, the county has received reports of 10 dogs displaying respiratory illness symptoms, despite testing negative for common viruses and bacteria associated with similar symptoms. Authorities are reaching out to the owners to determine potential sources of infection.

In response to this Atypical Canine Infection Respiratory Disease (aCIRD), officials are collaborating with federal and state entities to coordinate efforts and gather more information through ongoing investigations. The specific cause of aCIRD remains unknown.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the illness, veterinarians and dog owners are advised to remain vigilant for symptoms such as cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. In case of observed symptoms:

  1. Contact your veterinarian for a thorough evaluation of the dog.
  2. Isolate sick dogs at home for a minimum of 28 days from the onset of illness.
  3. Quarantine dogs exposed to the sick dog at home for 14 days, monitoring them for symptoms.
  4. Implement regular cleaning and disinfection of surfaces.
  5. Keep the affected dog at home and away from day care, boarding kennels, grooming facilities, and dog parks.
  6. If a dog becomes ill after boarding or being in a facility, seek veterinary care and inform the facility promptly about the illness.
