For the second time this year, Vasiliy Lomachenko will be entering the ring. This time, the stakes are even higher.
Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) has been trying to work his way back to reach a position to once again be a lightweight champion. Back on Oct. 17, 2020, he was stunned by Teofimo Lopez, losing the WBA (Super), WBO and The Ring belts. Lopez has since lost to George Kambosos Jr., who is now the undisputed lightweight champion.
Lomachenko has the potential to set up a clash with Kambosos to reach the boxing summit again, but first, he will have to face Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KOs) in a highly anticipated lightweight clash.
Lomachenko had been hoping to set up a rematch against Lopez, but was unable to land the title bout. Instead, Lomachenko faced Masayoshi Nakatani in June, and won the fight by TKO in the ninth round. If Lomachenko is able to get past Commey convincingly, it could set him up in a position to face Kambosos in a fight for the lightweight belts, especially given recent struggles by other top lightweights like Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.
Commey has experience with Lopez, having lost in a Dec. 14, 2019, clash in the second round by TKO in a fight that decided the IBF lightweight champion.

What happens if Lomachenko wins?
Should Lomachenko come away with the win, he might have a shot to face undisputed lightweigth champion Kambosos as early as next year, giving him a shot to earn back his status as a lightweight champion. Lomachenko lost his status as the lightweight champion to Lopez, but Lopez lost on Nov. 27 to Kambosos, handing the Australian fighter the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight belts. A victory by Lomachenko could make him the most likely challenger for Kambosos.
If Commey wins the fight, however, it would given him a chance to possibly fight against Kambosos, especially with both fighters sharing the same promoter in Lou DiBella.
