Six seasons and a commercial.
Joel McHale and Ken Jeong had some memorable tiffs on the small screen as cast members on “Community,” the hit NBC show that some feel ended prematurely.
Rather than get “six seasons and a movie,” like the cast members wanted, we got a commercial, instead, thanks to Planters, the good nut people.
While viewers are still patiently waiting for McHale, Jeong, Donald Glover, Gillian Jacobs and others to reunite one day, this commercial will have to do for now.
Here it is:
Joel McHale, Ken Jeong Super Bowl commercial 2022
Which side are you on, America?
The Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts commercial — aptly titled “Feed the Debate” — starts with actors Joel McHale and Ken Jeong sitting at a bar, leading to Jeong criticizing the way McHale handles his nuts (sorry, phrasing).
McHale clearly believes that “mixed nuts” means, well, you eat them “mixed,” while Jeong takes the opposite stance — each nut deserves love, care and appreciation, individually, as you shove it down your gullet.
The duo’s back-and-forth banter leads to Jeong recording a video and posting it on the internet (don’t try this at home, kids), sparking a debate in the bar, and the country at large.
As the fabric of our nation is pulled apart at the seams in the wake of Jeong’s video, in the end, McHale jests sarcastically: “Who knew America would tear itself apart over a relatively minor difference of opinion?”
That’s a rhetorical question, by the way.
In years past, Planters’ mascot Mr. Peanut — full name Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe — has been in the Super Bowl spotlight, including a controversial 2020 ad featuring the death and rebirth of the anthropomorphic legume that led to some extreme reactions.
There are different reactions in this commercial, but at least they came with laughs.
