Lamar Jackson illness: Ravens QB explains why he couldn’t play in Week 11 vs. Bears

Lamar Jackson illness: Ravens QB explains why he couldn't play in Week 11 vs. Bears

Going into the Ravens’ Week 11 game against the Bears, it was assumed that Lamar Jackson would be able to play for Baltimore.

Jackson had missed Wednesday and Thursday practices as a result of an illness. He returned to practice on Friday and his full participation designation seemed to indicate that he was healthy and ready to play.

Jackson even told reporters after practice that he was “feeling great” and noted that his sickness wasn’t a big deal.

“I usually don’t get sick, for real,” Jackson said after Friday’s practice, per ESPN. “I used to eat my Flintstone vitamins when I was a kid. My immunity system should be good.”

However, things changed rapidly for Jackson on Saturday. He had a relapse of his illness and was deemed “50-50” for the game. He ended up sitting out because of the malady. Tyler Huntley started in place of Jackson and led the Ravens to a 16-13 win over the Bears.

What was the sickness that kept Jackson out of action? Here’s everything to know about Jackson’s illness and how he is feeling one week after his first missed contest of the season.

INJURY UPDATE: Ravens WR Marquise Brown

Is Lamar Jackson playing tonight vs. Browns?

Jackson is planning to play against the Browns. He practiced fully for the Ravens every day this week and carry no injury designation going into Sunday’s night’s game against the Browns.

“Feeling good!” Jackson told reporters when asked about his status at Wednesday’s practice. “Feeling great this time. I’m back, feeling good. I’m positive. No relapses, man, we’re good.”

It was always expected that Jackson would be absent for just one game, and it looks like he’s on track to return for “Sunday Night Football.”

What was Lamar Jackson’s illness?

Jackson didn’t divulge exactly what type of illness he had, but he did speak about the symptoms he dealt with.  They included the chills, night sweats and general fatigue, as Jackson explained.

“I have no clue [what happened],” Jackson said, per the Ravens’ official website. “I just got fatigued, was catching little chills, was out of it. … I was trying to rest, trying to recover and get all the way better and I’m just sweating in my sleep.”

Jackson has dealt with a few illnesses during the 2021 NFL season. He also dealt with his second bout of COVID-19 in the early stages of training camp, so he has been sick quite a bit in the last five months.

Is that normal for Jackson? No, but he’s not overly concerned about what’s going on. The Ravens’ quarterback is chalking up his recent illnesses to bad luck more than anything else.

“It happens, but I’m not worried about it,” Jackson said. “I’ve been healthy all my life. I never had problems being ill at all till I’m here, so I don’t really know what that is. Hopefully, that’s done with.”
