Police have charged Georgia senior linebacker Adam Anderson with felony rape. Anderson willingly turned himself into the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on Wednesday and, according to online records, was booked into Athens-Clarke County Jail at 7:45 p.m. ET without bond.
ESPN reports that, according to an Athens-Clarke County incident report, a 21-year-old woman alleged Anderson raped her on Oct. 29. Per the report, the woman went to a house between midnight and 7 a.m. ET on Oct. 29. The woman had drinks at the residence, falling asleep before waking up to find Anderson raping her. She reported it to Athens-Clarke County police the same day.
The following day, Anderson participated in Georgia’s 34-7 win over Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. — a game in which he tallied seven tackles and half a sack. He was suspended from the team once the athletic department was made aware of the allegations on Nov. 2.
“We are aware of the report, and we don’t comment on law enforcement matters, but I’ve been clear about the high standards we have for our student-athletes on and off the field,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in a statement at the time. “I will be working closely with our administration to ensure we cooperate fully with all law enforcement and campus protocols.”
Anderson’s attorney, Steve Sadow, issued a statement claiming his client’s innocence.
“Adam is innocent of the charge brought against him and intends to vigorously defend himself in court,” Sadow said in a statement (via ESPN). “He will seek release on bond. Once again, Adam hopes and prays that the UGA community and the public keep an open mind and afford him the presumption of innocence that the law demands.”
Anderson, from Rome, Ga., was the No. 18 overall player and No. 1 outside linebacker in the class of 2018, per 247Sports’ Composite rankings. He currently ranks fifth on Georgia’s top-rated defense in tackles (32); second in tackles for loss (5.5); and first in sacks (5.5).
