CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying Qatar 2022: TV, schedule, results, standings for South American Eliminatorias

Qualifying to the World Cup from South America is one of the most grueling paths to the biggest tournament in global soccer. Each of the 10 nations plays a total of 18 matches over the course of the qualification process and the top four nations earn berths to the World Cup. The fifth-place team heads to an intercontinental playoff.

The South American qualifiers reached the halfway point on Thursday, Sept. 9 and it was a big day for teams in the middle of the pack. The leaders won at home, as expected: Brazil continued with a perfect 8-0-0 record by downing Peru 2-0, while Argentina used a hat trick from Lionel Messi to knock off Bolivia. But it’s the likes of Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia that made the biggest strides with home wins that vaulted them up the standings.

Ecuador looked to be in a comfortable position in recent matchdays, but it will now feel the pressure after the chasers caught up. Chile’s chances also took a hit with its 3-1 loss in Colombia.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works

It’s not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It’s three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.

After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
