Southern California Walmart store closing due to ‘business decision’

A Walmart location in Southern California is slated to permanently shut its doors to the public next month. The decision, as conveyed by a Walmart spokesperson, follows a comprehensive evaluation process undertaken by the retail giant. The closure of the West Covina store, according to the spokesperson speaking to KTLA, stems from its failure to meet the company’s financial projections. Despite Walmart’s robust overall performance, this particular store fell short of expectations.

The impending closure affects all 237 employees currently working at the West Covina store. However, they are offered the opportunity to transition to other nearby Walmart locations. With 16 stores operating in the Covina area, employing thousands of individuals, affected employees have several options for continued employment. Notably, there’s a Walmart Super Center merely four miles away from the soon-to-be-closed establishment.

Walmart has affirmed that there are no immediate plans for further closures in Southern California. Presently, the region hosts 309 Walmart stores, collectively providing employment for over 100,000 individuals. Alicia Anger, Walmart’s Communications Director, expressed appreciation towards the local customer base. She underscored the company’s commitment to serving customers across the area, including through its online platform and delivery services.

Acknowledging the loyalty of its customers, Anger conveyed Walmart’s gratitude to the community it served in West Covina. Despite the closure of the local store and its pharmacy, slated for March 29th, Walmart aims to maintain its relationship with patrons through its various alternative shopping avenues.
