Officers shoot reckless driving suspect after pursuit in downtown Los Angeles

In downtown Los Angeles, a man was shot by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) following a pursuit. The incident unfolded when officers from the Rampart Area station noticed a reckless driver in the vicinity of 6th and Witmer Streets just before 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Attempting to address the situation, the officers initiated a traffic stop around 8th Street and Hope Street. However, the suspect failed to comply, leading to a vehicle pursuit.

As the pursuit unfolded, a collision occurred between the officers’ vehicle and a fixed object at 12th Street and Broadway. Subsequently, the officers decided to terminate the pursuit. Despite this, an airship located the suspect’s vehicle, prompting ground units to re-engage the pursuit in the area around 12th Street and Stanford Avenue. The suspect, described as a white man in his mid-30s, eventually exited his vehicle several blocks away near 12th and Hooper Street.

Law enforcement officials reported that the officers observed the suspect wielding a handgun, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was struck by gunfire and was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. As of now, the identity of the man has not been released.

Fortunately, no members of the community were injured during the incident. However, the officers involved in the collision sustained minor injuries. The details surrounding the events leading to the pursuit and subsequent shooting are part of an ongoing investigation by the LAPD.
