LA County launches rent relief program for mom-and-pop landlords

Los Angeles County has initiated a $46.3 million rent relief program to assist eligible landlords and tenants impacted by the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The LA County Rent Relief Program aims to provide grants of up to $30,000 per unit to qualified landlords, covering expenses from April 1, 2022, to the present. Administered by the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, the program specifically targets small landlords, including mom-and-pop landlords who own up to four rental units.

The primary objectives of the program are to prevent tenant evictions, support the sustainability of small-scale rental businesses, and ensure the continued availability of affordable housing in Los Angeles County.

Rafael Carbajal, the department’s Director, emphasized that the initiative seeks to offer direct financial assistance to small property owners, addressing the financial challenges they have faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. By supporting mom-and-pop landlords, the program aims to simultaneously preserve affordable housing options and reduce the number of tenant evictions resulting from overdue rent.

Landlords will be able to initiate the application process in mid-December, and the program includes the provision of free multilingual technical support.
